Healing in Color: Increasing Access to Mental Health Care in Diverse Communities

Mental health challenges affect people from all walks of life, but access to support isn’t always consistent across communities. Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, recognized each July, shines a light on the unique mental health experiences and barriers faced by minority communities — including Black, Hispanic / Latino, Asian American, Native American, and other racial and ethnic groups. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 38% of Black adults and 36% of Asian adults with mental illness received treatment in 2022, compared to 56% of White adults. This reflects an opportunity to increase awareness, access, and culturally responsive care.

Factors that contribute to these differences include cultural stigma, lack of resources, and limited provider availability. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) notes that many individuals from minority backgrounds struggle to find clinicians who understand their lived experiences. Additionally, fears around judgment or being misunderstood may keep individuals from seeking care.

Still, there is hope — and a growing movement toward increasing care for all communities. We can all play a part in improving access and reducing stigma. During Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s more important than ever to raise our voices, listen with empathy, and champion mental wellness for all.

Tips to Support Minority Mental Health:

  1. Educate yourself and others.
Learn how different cultures perceive and experience mental health. Share information from trustworthy sources like Mental Health America (MHA), NAMI, and NIMH.

  2. Promote open conversations.
Encourage honest discussions in your home, school, or workplace. Talking openly helps break down stigma and builds understanding.

  3. Increase access to culturally competent providers.
Find mental health professionals who are trained to support diverse populations and understand cultural context.

  4. Support community-based resources.
Volunteer with or donate to grassroots programs offering mental health support tailored to specific communities.

  5. Advocate for access.
Champion policies that expand mental health access for all communities.

At ConcertoCare, we believe that care should be as unique as the people we serve. That’s why our interdisciplinary teams — made up of providers, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, and community health workers — work together to create care plans that truly reflect each patient’s needs and background. We listen closely to what matters most to our patients, considering their cultural values and experiences. With this personalized approach, we aim to provide support that feels meaningful, ensuring everyone has the care they deserve, both physically and emotionally.
